The construction of a factory for the Chinese electric vehicle company BYD has come to a halt in Brazil after authorities uncovered a shocking case of over 160 Chinese nationals living and working in “slavery-like” conditions. The laborers, who were found at a construction site in Bahia, were reported to be toiling for long hours, sometimes even seven days in a row, and living in substandard accommodations.
These workers, employed by Jinjiang Construction Brazil, were allegedly not allowed to leave the site without permission, with more than 100 having their passports confiscated. They had been recruited from China and brought to Brazil for work.
