Access to ChatGPT is currently in the process of being restored after a disruption that occurred on Thursday afternoon. Users of ChatGPT, as well as its API and the text-to-video generator Sora, were all impacted by an issue with an “upstream provider,” as confirmed by OpenAI.
The disruption first became apparent on Thursday afternoon, as a significant number of users found themselves unable to use ChatGPT. The chatbot suddenly stopped responding to queries, and some users encountered an “internal server error” message when attempting to access the service.
The disruption seems to have started around 1:30 PM Eastern Time, coinciding with a sharp increase in reports on Down Detector. OpenAI provided a status update on their website at 2 PM Eastern Time, acknowledging the high error rates being experienced by ChatGPT, its API, and Sora.

By 6:15 PM Eastern Time, OpenAI reported that Sora was fully operational and that APIs were starting to recover. However, a complete solution for ChatGPT and its APIs was still being worked on, as stated in the most recent update.
Microsoft, OpenAI’s exclusive cloud provider, mentioned a “power issue” at one of its datacenters that began around the same time as the OpenAI problems, affecting North America and also causing issues with Xbox cloud gaming. The specific “upstream provider” responsible for the issue was not identified.

Meanwhile, Microsoft informed customers of “storage latency, timeouts, or HTTP 500 errors” in the South Central United States due to a power incident on December 26, 2024. Mitigation measures were put in place, and work was underway to verify the recovery of affected services.
Microsoft later confirmed that the affected datacenter had been “fully restored” to power by shortly after 5 PM Eastern Time on the same day.
Over the past few months, ChatGPT has faced periodic downtime, with a notable instance occurring shortly after the release of Sora to ChatGPT subscribers earlier in December. On that occasion, both the video generation utility and ChatGPT experienced an extended period of downtime. Additionally, in June, a widespread outage impacted ChatGPT and other AI tools.
As of the latest update on December 26th, both Microsoft and OpenAI are working to address the issues and restore full functionality to ChatGPT and its related services. Additional information will be provided as the situation develops.
